Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

For the record…. BNA is not a political organization and we have no political ties to any party but, as an organization, and like many Americans, we are very interested in the economic agenda that our new administration is planning to unveil…  For more information on the new administration’s Agenda, please visit: http://change.gov/agenda/

This Article is courtesy of the website www.change.gov.  This is the website of President-Elect Obama and his Cabinet.  This particular article is located  in the Pressroom Section and was dated January 8, 2009.

WASHINGTON – Today, President-elect Barack Obama delivered remarks at George Mason University where he made the case for urgent action on an American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan that will save or create over 3 million jobs while investing in priorities like health care, energy, and education that will jumpstart economic growth.  This plan will represent not just new policy, but a new approach to meeting our most urgent challenges.

President-elect Obama announced that an American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan will jumpstart job creation and long-term growth by:

  • Doubling the production of alternative energy in the next three years.
  • Modernizing more than 75% of federal buildings and improve the energy efficiency of two million American homes, saving consumers and taxpayers billions on our energy bills.
  • Making the immediate investments necessary to ensure that within five years, all of America’s medical records are computerized.
  • Equipping tens of thousands of schools, community colleges, and public universities with 21st century classrooms, labs, and libraries.
  • Expanding broadband across America, so that a small business in a rural town can connect and compete with their counterparts anywhere in the world.

New I-9 Forms

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Beginning February 2, 2009, Employers Must Use the Revised Form I-9 and Can No Longer Accept Expired Documents to Verify Employment Eligibility

Employers must use the revised Form I-9 for all new hires and to reverify any employee with expiring employment authorization, effective February 2, 2009.  Employers must complete a Form I-9 for all newly hired employees to verify their identity and authorization to work in the United States.  The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has revised its regulations governing the types ofacceptable identity and employment authorization documents and receipts that employees may present to their employers for completion of the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification.  As of Feb. 2, 2009, expired passports or state-issued driver’s licenses and other outdated identification cards will no longer qualify as valid documentation for Form I-9. Social Security cards will not be affected by the change because they do not expire.

New hires can present various forms of identification to prove their work eligibility. The list of approved documents is divided into three categories: List A, which includes documents that verify identity and employment authorization; List B, which confirms identity only; and List C, which certifies employment authorization only. U.S. passports are included on List A, while driver’s licenses fall into category B. Workers must either provide one document from List A, or one document each from lists B and C.
