Here is the latest hot job of the week… it is a full-time opportunity in Hazelton, PA (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area) for a company called Pets United.   The opening is in the Merchandising department and they are looking for someone who has Merchant/Buyer experience.

JOB TITLE: Merchant

STATUS: Full-time/Salaried

DEPARTMENT:  Merchandising

Reports to: Vice President of Merchandising

Duties:

  • Source and select products within designated categories that fit the brand strategy
  • Apply professional knowledge of merchandising principals to meet sales, gross margin, and contribution objectives:
    • Develop and manage category assortments  - participate in seasonal catalog  review by division
    • Align merchandise assortments, with pricing and vendor mix
    • Conduct key category style outs to determine opportunities for assortment changes, product development, and gross margin enhancement
    • Develop catalog  pages for all direct mail vehicles based upon catalog/web metrics
    • Review returns and identify problems and required changes
    • Develop trade show goals by vendor and category
  • Develop new and exclusive products, some of which may be privately labeled
  • Provide leadership, direction, and support for all internal and external customers
  • Research sourcing opportunities to improve quality and profitability on existing items
  • Maintain awareness of competitors in Marketplace – Catalog and Web
  • Negotiate and confirm pricing, packaging, delivery, terms and advertising with vendors
  • Monitor and evaluate vendor performance and determine key strategic partnerships
  • Develop the catalog drop list, by season, by division
  • Responsible for overstock inventory and strategy to reduce slow moving  product
  • Implement catalog direction for categories including layout, photography, copy and proofing.
  • Work closely with Purchasing to support inventory planning  seasonal planning and overall vendor communication
  • Monitor back order report and assist Purchasing in resolving vendor related issues
  • Work closely with Marketing and Creative on brand strategy, product sales and customer messaging
  • Attend trade shows according to product line responsibility
  • Responsible for the management and development of Assistant Buyers.
  • Support customer services and warehouse staff when needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Keep abreast of industry trends.

Minimum Job Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of buying/merchandising experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Comprehensive use of Excel
  • Proven history in new product design and development
  • Equine knowledge helpful but not required
  • Team player
