Job Summary:

The Layer 1 Network Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting the physical layer (Layer 1) of network infrastructure, including cabling systems and physical hardware for voice and data networks. This role requires a deep understanding of structured cabling systems, copper and fiber optic cable installation, and the setup of network-related hardware. The ideal candidate will ensure the reliability and performance of physical network connections to support business operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cabling Installation:
    Install, terminate, and test structured cabling systems, including CAT5e, CAT6, and fiber optic cables, to support data, voice, and video networks.

  • Physical Network Setup:
    Install and maintain physical network components such as patch panels, network racks, cabinets, and cable management systems, ensuring proper organization and labeling.

  • Testing & Troubleshooting:
    Test, certify, and troubleshoot copper and fiber optic cabling systems using industry-standard tools (e.g., Fluke testers, OTDR) to ensure optimal network performance.

  • Maintenance & Repairs:
    Diagnose and resolve physical network connectivity issues, including signal loss, cable damage, or equipment malfunctions. Replace or repair faulty hardware and cables as needed.

  • Documentation & Labeling:
    Maintain detailed records of cabling installations, labeling all cables, patch panels, and network hardware to ensure accurate network documentation.

  • Collaboration with IT Teams:
    Work closely with network engineers and IT staff to ensure the physical infrastructure aligns with network design plans and project requirements.

  • Compliance & Safety:
    Ensure that all cabling and installations meet local building codes, industry standards (e.g., EIA/TIA, BICSI), and safety regulations. Adhere to safety protocols to maintain a safe work environment.

Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    2+ years of experience working in structured cabling, network installations, or Layer 1 network support.
    Hands-on experience with copper and fiber optic cable installations, terminations, and troubleshooting.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in installing and terminating copper (CAT5e, CAT6) and fiber optic cabling (single-mode, multi-mode).

    • Knowledge of network cabling standards and industry best practices for Layer 1 infrastructure.

    • Familiarity with network hardware installations, including patch panels, racks, and cable management systems.

  • Certifications (preferred but not required):

    • BICSI Certification (Installer or Technician)

    • CompTIA Network+

    • Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT)

  • Physical Requirements:
    Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, work in confined spaces, and perform tasks that require prolonged standing, crouching, and climbing.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of physical network topologies and Layer 1 connectivity standards.

  • Familiarity with cable testing tools and techniques, including OTDR for fiber optic testing.

  • Basic understanding of Layer 2 and Layer 3 network components, such as switches and routers.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily onsite in commercial buildings, data centers, or construction sites.

  • May require occasional after-hours or weekend work to support network installations or repairs.
