Job Summary:

The Infrastructure Cabling Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing the physical infrastructure supporting voice and data networks. This role involves the design, installation, and troubleshooting of structured cabling systems, including copper and fiber optic cables, to ensure a reliable and high-performance network. The ideal candidate has strong technical expertise in network cabling, excellent problem-solving skills, and a focus on safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cabling Installation:
    Install, terminate, and certify structured cabling systems (CAT5e, CAT6, fiber optics, etc.) for voice, data, and video networks, following industry standards (e.g., EIA/TIA, BICSI).

  • Infrastructure Design & Layout:
    Interpret blueprints, floor plans, and network schematics to plan and install network cabling systems in commercial and industrial settings.

  • Network Equipment Integration:
    Install and secure cable pathways, racks, patch panels, and network equipment within data closets, server rooms, and telecom spaces.

  • Testing & Troubleshooting:
    Perform cable testing, certification, and troubleshooting using tools such as cable testers, network analyzers, and OTDR for fiber optics.

  • Maintenance & Repairs:
    Diagnose and repair issues with cabling infrastructure, ensuring timely resolutions to minimize downtime and network disruptions.

  • Compliance & Safety:
    Ensure all installations comply with local codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., NEC, OSHA). Maintain a clean and safe work environment, always adhering to safety protocols.

  • Documentation:
    Create and maintain detailed documentation of installations, cable routes, and network layouts. Label cables and equipment for future reference.

  • Collaboration:
    Work closely with project managers, IT teams, contractors, and vendors to ensure that network infrastructure meets the needs of the organization and is delivered on time.

Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    3+ years of experience as a cabling technician, network installer, or similar role focused on structured cabling systems.
    Strong hands-on experience with copper and fiber optic installations, terminations, and testing.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in the installation and termination of copper (CAT5e, CAT6, etc.) and fiber optic cabling.

    • Familiarity with testing equipment and methodologies for both copper and fiber networks (e.g., Fluke testers, OTDR).

    • Experience with installing and organizing network racks, cabinets, patch panels, and associated infrastructure.

  • Certifications (preferred but not required):

    • BICSI Certification (Installer or Technician)

    • ETA Fiber Optic Installer (FOI) Certification

    • CompTIA Network+

  • Physical Requirements:
    Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs), work in confined spaces, and perform duties that require prolonged standing, crouching, and bending.

Preferred Skills:

  • Understanding of networking concepts such as IP addressing, switches, routers, and network topologies.

  • Familiarity with local building codes, NEC, and industry standards for structured cabling.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily work onsite in commercial buildings, data centers, or construction environments.

  • May require occasional after-hours work to minimize disruption to business operations.
