Job Description: Real Estate Financial Controller
Position Overview: The Real Estate Financial Controller plays a crucial role in overseeing the financial operations of our vertically integrated real estate company. The Controller is responsible for managing all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls within the organization. This position requires a thorough understanding of real estate accounting principles, proficiency in MRI and excel software, and strong leadership and team work skills to effectively work with the accounting team.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting:

  • Prepare accurate and timely weekly and monthly financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.

  • Review capex budgets

  • Compile funding statements

  • Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.

  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement.


Budgeting and Forecasting:

  • Ensure appropriate budgets are made

  • Monitor budget performance and provide regular updates to management.

  • Prepare financial forecasts to support strategic decision-making.


Cash Management:

  • Manage cash flow and liquidity to meet operational needs and debt obligations.

  • Implement effective cash management policies and procedures.

  • Monitor banking activities and reconcile bank accounts.


Accounts Payable and Receivable:

  • Oversee the accounts payable and receivable functions, including invoice processing, vendor payments, and tenant billing.

  • Ensure timely and accurate recording of transactions in MRI software.


Property/ Capex Accounting:

  • Maintain property-level accounting records and ledgers.

  • Review property financials for accuracy and completeness.

  • Coordinate with property managers to address accounting issues and discrepancies.

Internal Controls and Compliance:

  • Establish and maintain internal control procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with policies and regulations.

  • Coordinate audits and reviews with external auditors.

  • Implement recommendations to improve internal controls and operational efficiency.

MRI System Management:

  • Serve as the primary administrator for the MRI accounting system.

  • Configure system settings, user permissions, and reporting templates.

  • Provide training and support to staff on MRI functionality and best practices.




Team Leadership:

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance and support to foster professional growth.

  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages teamwork and accountability.

  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to ensure high performance standards are met.




Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field;

  • Big Four experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in real estate accounting

  • Proficiency in MRI  or similar property management accounting software required.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and real estate industry accounting standards.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and a track record of building and motivating high-performing teams.
